In each entry, opposing AI units possess a directional field of view — a cone projecting forward from their position — within which a Ghost can be spotted, tracked, and engaged. Vision Cone Detection is the system by which enemy AI determines whether it has visually acquired you. Each hostile unit projects a directional field of view — essentially a cone — in the direction it is facing. If your character model intersects that cone and you are within the unit's visual range, detection begins. Detection is not binary. Most entries use a graduated awareness ladder. An enemy first becomes suspicious, pausing and turning toward your last known position. If you remain visible or make noise, the state escalates to alert, at which point the unit calls for nearby reinforcements. Full combat engagement follows, with the enemy locking onto your position and exchanging fire. The reverse is also true: if you break line of sight and remain silent, the enemy will search for a few seconds before returning to unaware. Several modifiers shape how the cone behaves. Crouching or prone reduces your silhouette and, in some titles, your effective detection range. Dense foliage, smoke, or solid cover blocks the cone entirely. Bright lighting or a flashlight on your person can increase detection range, while darkness or wearing a ghillie-style camouflage can shrink it. Movement speed matters: sprinting through a cone is far more likely to trigger detection than walking or standing still. Why it matters: the entire tactical loop of Ghost Recon — route planning, squad coordination, timing of suppressions, use of environmental cover — orbits this single mechanic. Master the geometry of the cones and you become invisible; ignore them and every firefight becomes a desperate scramble.
